Elbow condition

Golfer's elbow

Pain on the inner side of the elbow from overuse. We'll explain the simple steps that help — and what to do if it doesn't settle.

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) is the inner-elbow cousin of tennis elbow. It causes pain where the tendons that bend your wrist and fingers attach to the bump on the inner side of the elbow.

What are the symptoms?

  • Pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow
  • Pain when gripping, lifting or flexing the wrist
  • Sometimes aching that spreads down the forearm

What causes it?

Like tennis elbow, it comes from repeated strain of the tendon — from gripping activities, manual work, throwing or golf.

How is it diagnosed?

A history and examination are usually enough. Mr Corner will also check that the nearby ulnar nerve isn't involved, as the two can occur together.

Treatment options

Without surgery

Most cases settle with activity changes, a targeted physiotherapy and stretching programme, anti-inflammatories, and occasionally a brace or injection for stubborn pain.

If it persists

In the rare cases that don't improve after months of treatment, a minor procedure to release the affected tendon can help.

What to expect during recovery

Golfer's elbow can take a few months to settle, but the outlook is very good with the right plan and a little patience.

When should I see a specialist? If inner-elbow pain is persisting or affecting your grip, an assessment will confirm the cause and set out an effective treatment plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is golfer's elbow serious?

No — it's uncomfortable but not dangerous, and it almost always improves without surgery.

What's the difference between golfer's and tennis elbow?

Golfer's elbow affects the inner side of the elbow; tennis elbow affects the outer side. The causes and treatments are similar.
