Tennis elbow
Pain on the outer elbow when gripping or lifting. Most cases of tennis elbow improve without surgery with the right guidance and a little patience.
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is pain and tenderness on the outer side of the elbow, where the tendons that straighten your wrist and fingers attach. You don't have to play tennis to get it — it's usually caused by everyday gripping and lifting.
What are the symptoms?
- Pain and tenderness on the outer elbow
- Pain when gripping, lifting, shaking hands or turning a key or handle
- A weaker grip because of the pain
What causes it?
It develops from small strains where the tendon meets the bone, often from repetitive gripping, DIY, manual work or racquet sports. It's most common between the ages of 35 and 55.
How is it diagnosed?
Mr Corner can usually diagnose tennis elbow from your symptoms and a quick examination. A scan is occasionally used if the picture is unclear or the pain is stubborn.
Treatment options
Without surgery
The great majority of cases settle with time and the right measures: activity modification, a specific physiotherapy and stretching programme, anti-inflammatories, and sometimes a brace. Simple home exercises help a great deal — see our rehabilitation protocols for a guide and video.
If it lingers
For the small number of cases that don't improve after many months, a minor procedure to release and clean the affected tendon can relieve symptoms.
What to expect during recovery
Tennis elbow can be slow to settle — often several months — but the outlook is excellent. A clear plan and a little patience usually see it resolve fully.
Frequently asked questions
How long does tennis elbow take to get better?
It varies, but many cases settle over a few months with the right treatment. Some take longer — the outlook is still very good.
Do I need surgery?
Rarely. The vast majority of people recover without surgery. An operation is reserved for stubborn cases that haven't responded to several months of other treatment.
